Making medical decisions, especially those about the end of your life, can be overwhelming. You're getting a lot of information and options, and you have to make important choices that will affect your entire family. Here are some tips from the Mesothelioma Center to help you work with your doctor and other healthcare staff, and to help ease the process.
1. Don't go alone: Taking someone with you ensures that you have someone there not only for moral and emotional support, but to help you remember all the topics the staff have covered. They can also make sure you didn’t forget to ask any questions and are satisfied that you have all the information you need.
2. Take notes: Trying to remember every little thing you discuss with your healthcare provider will be impossible to do. Notes allow you to go back over your conversation after you've had time to process it, and can help when sharing the information with other people who will help you make the decision. Don't be afraid to ask for handouts and informational materials, either.
3. Stay organized: The information and options you have in healthcare and hospice can be overwhelming. Consider creating a folder or file with all the informational materials, and adding to it as you make decisions and sign legal paperwork. This will make it simple to locate any paperwork you might need for a doctor’s visit or to share with family.
4. Use real words: It's important for you to really understand what's happening and what treatments you will receive. If you want or do not want specific therapies, tell the healthcare staff. If you aren't sure if a certain treatment is offered or a benefit covered by your insurance, ask. You'll save yourself the worry by using specific words from the start.
5. Stay in contact: Healthcare providers love patients and families who are active participants in their health. Maintaining a relationship with the staff will help you feel comfortable enough to ask questions and give honest answers during meetings. It's much easier for a nurse to have a serious discussion when they've built a rapport with the family.
